Beauty Spring Clean
Hello again! I've recently posted this latest post on my Tumblr but I am going to repost it here as I realise from personal experience that it's difficult to know where on earth you start delving into that beauty bag and saying goodbye to things that aren't going to be your best friend for much longer. So make yourself comfy and relax while I share some personal tips to make that dreaded clear out easier ;)
Time to break up with some make-up. I know it's hard, I know you love your favourites (as do I!) but guess what? Clearing space means a whopper beauty shopping binge for refills...serious silver lining! But how do you decide what to keep and what to throw out?!
Keep or Chuck?
You'd never put gone-off milk in your tea (well not intentionally anyway) so why would you use out of date make-up? So it's time to check the date and chuck the crap. Because those pimples, patches of dry skin, cold sores and nasty eye-infections could all be from using old cosmetics. Renowned make-up artist Christine Lucignano (I've done my research hehe), who has worked on the beautiful faces of celebs such as Alexa Chung, explains why using out of date make-up sees you lose the benefits of the product.
Lipstick/Lipgloss
Lasts: 1-2 years
When applying, make sure to use a clean lipstick brush or fingertip. Sharing is not recommended! If you stick to that rule, your lipstick and lipgloss should last one or two years. The scent will be the first sign all is not well, so if in doubt, sniff it out.
Eyeshadow/Blusher/Powder
Lasts: 1 year
As always with things that you apply to your peepers, due care is needed with shadows. Powder shadows last longer than liquid based ones (they have a six month lifespan), but you still need to be careful because of the fact that you use eyeshadow around your eyes. When it comes to powder and blush, once your brushes are consistently clean, you'll get lots of time out of them.
Liquid liner
Lasts: 3-6 months
Pencil liners for lips and eyes can last about two years, but liquid liners only last three to six months before you need to get rid of it. Basically, anything liquid based is more likely to develop bacteria in a shorter time, so be vigilant.
Concealer/Foundation
Lasts: 6 months
Concealer comes in contact with your most sensitive areas of skin, blemishes, spots and dark circles. Make sure your concealer brush or applicator is immaculately clean after every use. Same for foundation. Its's what makes your face look even and fresh. If either of these go past the use-by, they'll cause your skin real problems.
Mascara
Lasts: 3-6 months
You'll know yourself when your mascara is ready to be binned, and you can usually squeeze another month out of it from there, but once you pass the six month mark it has to go. It's liquid based and in such proximity to your eyes, so gone-off mascara spreads quickly.

"There are skin care benefits in your foundation that you will be losing after it passes the expiry date. Think about all of the benefits that make-up companies pay untold amounts of research and perfect. They won't be working properly. If you want your foundation to even out and protect your skin, your lip plumping gloss to keep plumping, your nail varnish not to chip and your lash building mascara to keep building, stick to those expiry dates".

Some top tips for getting the most out of your products and keeping your skin safe...
- Look for the expiry date symbol on products. It'll be a little tub with a lid open and a number inside. That shows how many months you can use the product (effectively and safely) for.
- Label your products when they're first opened to know exactly how long you have to use the product safely.
- Don't ever share your mascara or un-sharpened pencils with anyone. This way you'll dramatically reduce your chances of getting passed an infection. Same applies to lipstick. Avoid cold sore sharing at all costs.
- Check the scent and texture of a new product. If the scent or texture changes after you've had it awhile, it's time to chuck it in the bin.
My Five Main Rules:
These will make sure your beauty bag is bang up to date...
- If it's out of date throw it out. No questions asked.
- If you haven't used it for three months, but it's not out of date, store it away.
- If you use it regularly, keep it in your make-up bag.
- If it's trend based and your keeping it 'just in case' throw it out. If the trend happens again don't panic.
- If you have a soft spot for it and never want to part with it, remember this: It's make-up not human.
Wash Out
When you're clearing out your make-up collection, any brushes that have seen better days need to be tossed as well. And for the ones you keep, remember, washing your cosmetic brushes often will keep your make-up clean and your face will reap the benefits. Your make-up will go on smoother too, and your brushes will last longer. If you need something to clean them with, there's a specially made shampoo for cleaning brushes and sponges, it's called Sponge Shampoo, it's approximately €12 from Make Up For Ever and a little goes a long way, alternatively you could use the old school method of water and hair shampoo ;)
Long story short, make brushes last by cleaning them regularly.
I hope this gave you some inspiration to delve into that overloaded beauty bag and make some room for gorgeous new products! Have any of you any useful tips for clearing your make-up bag? I would love to hear them, just leave a comment :)
